Cashmere is one of the finest natural fibres in the world, combed from the undercoat of Chinese and Mongolian goats. Its softness and luxury make it special, but garments and socks made from this delicate fibre require a little extra care compared to those crafted from coarser wools.

Washing Your Cashmere

Cashmere knitwear can be either hand washed or dry cleaned. We recommend regular hand washing to keep your garment soft and fresh.

How To Handwash Cashmere

  • Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a mild detergent or specialist cashmere shampoo.

  • Gently swish the garment in the water — avoid rubbing or wringing.

  • Rinse thoroughly in clean lukewarm water.

  • Carefully press out excess water without lifting the saturated garment (to avoid stretching).

  • A short, light spin cycle in a washing machine will help remove most of the water.

  • Smooth the garment back into shape, lay flat on a towel, and dry naturally away from direct heat or sunlight.

  • Once dry, press lightly with a cool iron if needed.

    Never tumble dry.

Pure Wool Garments

For garments made from 100% wool, we recommend following the same gentle hand-washing steps as above. Some items may be suitable for dry cleaning — always check the care label before washing.

How To Store Cashmere & Prevent Moths

  • Use Protect Me or Rescue Me scent bags: These natural moth-repellent bags keep your knitwear safe while leaving a subtle, fresh fragrance.
  • Store in breathable bags or drawers: This prevents dust build-up and keeps pests away.

  • Fold rather than hang: Always fold cashmere items to help them maintain their shape.

If your knitwear does become damaged, we do offer a mend and repair service. Please contact us for more details.

Pilling

Some cashmere and pure wool garments may develop small bobbles or "pills" on the surface after the first few wears. This is a completely natural characteristic of fine fibres and not a sign of inferior quality. Pills can be easily removed by hand or with a wool comb.

With the right care, your garment will only improve over time, becoming softer and more comfortable as it ages.

Quick Refresh Between Washing

  • Shake & Air: Gently shake your cashmere to remove dust and hang it in the fresh air to revitalise the fibres. A light spritz of Clothes Doctor Knitwear Mist will also refresh and protect your garment with a natural fragrance.

  • Spot Clean: Small marks or stains can often be treated at home. Use a slightly damp white cloth and gently dab the affected area with cold water — never rub. For oily stains, apply a little cashmere shampoo. Fizzy water can also help lift fresh stains as the bubbles work dirt particles free. Always spot-test brightly coloured cashmere in a discreet area first to ensure colourfastness. If colour transfers, we recommend professional dry cleaning.

  • Air Dry: After spot cleaning or refreshing, air dry your cashmere in a well-ventilated space or outdoors. If the item is very damp, lay it flat to dry so it keeps its shape. Never tumble dry cashmere.

With a little extra care, your cashmere will stay soft, beautiful, and timeless for years to come. From careful washing and thoughtful storage to refreshing between wears, these simple steps will help your garments only get better with age.
