While often associated with colder weather, a well-made merino wool sock is far more versatile than you might expect. From everyday wear and smarter shoes to countryside walks and long journeys, merino offers warmth without unnecessary bulk and comfort throughout changing temperatures.
At Corgi, we use merino wool in a range of different weights and designs, creating socks in our Welsh factory that combine the natural qualities of wool with the durability needed for everyday wear.
What Makes Merino Wool Different?
Merino wool comes from Merino sheep and is prized for its particularly fine fibres. Compared with coarser traditional wools, merino feels noticeably softer against the skin, making it especially well suited to socks and other garments worn close to the body.
Its appeal goes beyond softness. Merino wool is breathable, insulating and able to manage moisture, giving it a natural versatility that works across different seasons and occasions.

Did you know?
Merino sheep produce some of the finest wool fibres, which is why merino feels much softer against the skin than many traditional wools.
Warm When You Need It, Breathable When You Don’t
One of merino wool’s greatest advantages is its ability to help regulate temperature. In colder conditions, its fibres help trap insulating air close to the skin. As temperatures rise, the fibre remains breathable, helping excess heat and moisture escape. The result is a sock that can feel cosy without becoming excessively heavy or hot.
Choosing the right weight is key. A lightweight merino sock works beautifully with everyday or smarter footwear, while heavier styles offer additional warmth and comfort with boots during the colder months.
Naturally Soft
Warmth should not have to mean bulk or scratchiness. The fine structure of merino fibres gives the wool its characteristic softness, allowing it to sit comfortably against the skin while still providing natural insulation.
This makes lightweight merino particularly useful for those who want the benefits of wool in a finer sock that can be worn with shoes as easily as boots.
Breathable and Moisture Managing
Comfortable feet are not simply about keeping warm. During a busy day, moisture and heat can build up inside footwear. Merino wool can absorb and manage moisture while remaining comfortable against the skin, helping create a more balanced environment around the foot.
That makes merino an excellent choice for commuting, travelling, walking or simply spending a long day in the same pair of shoes.
Why We Blend Merino Wool
At Corgi, we use different merino wool blends depending on the weight and purpose of the sock.
Our lightweight merino styles are made from 63% wool and 37% nylon. The addition of nylon is intentional, helping to improve durability, resilience and shape retention in a finer sock designed for regular wear. Socks experience considerable friction, particularly around the heel and toe, so this blend helps balance the natural softness and breathability of merino wool with everyday practicality.
Our heavyweight merino wool styles are crafted from 80% Merino Wool and 20% Cotton, creating a warmer, more substantial sock with a beautifully soft and comfortable feel.
By choosing the right blend for each style, we can make the most of merino wool’s natural qualities while ensuring every pair is suited to how it is intended to be worn.
More Than a Walking Sock
Merino wool has long been associated with outdoor clothing, but we think it deserves a place well beyond the walking trail. A beautifully made merino sock can be just as at home beneath tailored trousers as it is inside a pair of boots. Plain ribbed styles provide a timeless everyday option, while stripes, Fair Isle patterns and traditional motifs bring a little more character.
It is this combination of practicality and understated style that makes merino such an enduring choice.
Caring for Your Merino Wool Socks
A little care can help your socks retain their softness, shape and appearance for longer. Always follow the instructions on the individual care label. Generally, wool socks benefit from gentle washing at a low temperature with an appropriate detergent.
Avoid excessive heat and harsh washing cycles, and allow them to dry naturally rather than exposing them to unnecessary heat. Turning socks inside out before washing can also help clean the inside effectively while protecting the appearance of the outer surface.
