If you want to treat yourself - and your feet - then a pair of cashmere silk socks is the ultra-luxurious addition you need to make to your wardrobe. Whether it's an exquisitely soft pair to wear in bed or a toasty toe warmer when you’re out and about, cashmere is the little luxury you can enjoy every day.

Lightweight cashmere silk socks combine the softness of cashmere with the strength, durability and colour of silk. The result is a blissfully soft sock that is incredibly comfortable to wear and holds its shape all day long.

When you’re making an investment in the ultimate in sock luxury, it pays to know a little more about where your socks come from and how you can keep them in tip-top condition. So, here’s our informative guide with a few things to keep in mind…

Where Does Cashmere Come From?

Cashmere is made from the soft undercoat of the Capra Hircus goat, known commonly as the Kashmir goat, which lives in the Himalayas, on the Tibetan Highlands and in Inner Mongolia.

The Kashmir goat has particularly fine wool which is incredibly soft and warm to protect it from some of the harshest winters on earth. It has two coats: a superficial one that is made up of bulky hair, and an undercoat that consists of a short, fine and very warm down known as the duvet.

In the springtime the shepherds collect the wool manually using special long-toothed combs. The fibres of the two coats are then separated and only the fine hairs are selected, cleaned and woven into threads. The number of threads tells you how thick the fabric will be, from thin (2-ply) to thick (10-12-ply).

Cashmere can be worn against the skin without producing that horrible itching you get from sheep’s wool. That’s why once you’ve sampled the softness, warmth and comfort of cashmere, you’ll never be able to go back.

Keeping Your Socks in Top Condition

The beauty of quality cashmere silk socks is that if you care for them in the right way, they will reward you by getting softer and even more comfortable as they age.

As the fibres are so delicate, cashmere silk socks will require a little more attention than lesser quality products. Cashmere silk socks must be hand washed or dry-cleaned. To keep them in the best possible condition, we recommend hand washing them and following the steps below:

  • Wash your socks in lukewarm water using a mild detergent

  • Try not to wring or rub the garment when washing

  • Gently squeeze the excess water out of the socks before lifting to avoid stretching

  • Smooth the socks back into their original shape and place on a flat towel to dry naturally away from the direct heat of radiators or sunlight

  • Press lightly with a cool iron when dry
